Project Overview

Every Runner Carries a Name.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon was founded in 2001, six years after the bombing. Each runner carries a tag with the name of one of the 168 people who died on April 19, 1995. The race starts near the Memorial, passes it on course, and the connection is literal. It draws runners from all 50 states, is a Boston qualifier, and every dollar of proceeds benefits the OKC National Memorial & Museum. ESW manages start line operations and serves as a consulting partner to the race director.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is one of the most meaningful running events in the country — a Boston Marathon qualifying race drawing 26,000+ participants from all 50 states. ESW serves as start line operations partner and consulting resource, delivering precision logistics for the event's most critical moment: the gun.

The inaugural race launched in 2001 with just shy of 5,000 participants. Named a 'must-run marathon' by Runner's World magazine, it is an official Boston qualifier and has grown to host runners from every U.S. state. All event proceeds benefit the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. Next event: April 2027.

How We Made It Happen

Precision at the Starting Line.

The start line of a 26,000-person race is one of the most complex logistics challenges in event production. ESW manages corral organization, wave timing, announcer coordination, national anthem staging, and the precise sequencing that gets tens of thousands of people moving safely and on schedule.

Start Line OperationsManaging corral organization, wave sequencing, and participant flow for 26,000 runners across six distances at the start line.
Timing CoordinationCoordinating with the race timing vendor to ensure accurate gun starts, wave splits, and real-time results across all six distances.
Announcer & Ceremony StagingCoordinating the national anthem, opening ceremony, and elite athlete introductions — the program that runs before 26,000 people cross the start line.
Crowd & Corral ManagementCorral access control and crowd management at the start, including coordination at the Kids Marathon finish area.
ConsultingPre-event logistics planning and advisory support to the race director in the months leading up to race weekend.
The Result

The OKC Memorial Marathon draws 26,000 runners from every state to a course that runs through the heart of Oklahoma City. ESW manages start line operations — corral organization, wave sequencing, timing coordination, and ceremony staging. The goal is a clean, on-schedule start that matches the weight of the event.
